Little Known Facts About Hyline

Picture

·         The Westlake High School Dance Team was started in 1969 and named Hyline by its first line.  Westlake High School had broken away from Austin High School and Ms. Diana Zuniga became the first director of the team.

·         Hyline started as a 4-year team.  This stopped when Hill Country Middle School opened and 8th graders were no longer on the same campus.

·         The six directors of Hyline have been: Diana Zuniga, Barbara Loomis, Cindy Russell, Shannon Harty, Chelsee Capezzuti and Lindsay Joe. The assistant directors have been:  Tammie Gutherie, Kara Fuller, Amanda Aiken, Shannon Harty, Chelsee Capezzuti, Megan Nebgen, Heather Hill Duncan, Lindsay Joe , Lauren Smith and currently Madison Cashion.

·         Mrs. Joe  was 23 when she started at Westlake. Mrs. Smith graduated from Westlake and served as the Hyline Captain in 2004.

·         The name “Zenith” was given to the spring show by Ms. Zuniga and the first line.  Ms. Zuniga was fond of “Z” words!

·         Hyline has had 7 different field uniforms.  Hyline’s first captain, Kathy McQuown, donated her uniform now on display in the locker room.

·         Western boots were added to the last uniform.  Before that, tennis shoes and crew socks were worn on the field.  Before that it was white “go-go” boots (the heels were 2” high and broke off all the time).

·         The term “New-New” was born out of confusion between new girls already on the team and new girls coming onto the team.

·         The traditional Hyline football entrance is patterned after the Kilgore College Rangerettes.

·         Officers used to dance out front and in different colored uniforms as the line.  This tradition stopped when an officer slipped and fell and no one noticed.

·         Ms. Fuller, Ms. Harty, Mrs. Capezzuti, Mrs. Joe, Mrs. Smith and Ms. Cashion were all Captains of their high school dance teams. Ms. Fuller, Ms. Harty, Mrs. Capezzuti , Mrs. Joe and Ms. Cashion were all Kilgore Rangerettes.  Ms. Cashion, Mrs. Capezzuti and Ms. Harty also served as Rangerette Captains.

·         Numerous Hyline members have gone to dance in college and professionally including the Kilgore College Rangerettes, UT Pom Squad, TCU Showgirls, SMU Dance Department, A&M Dance Team, UT Dance Department, and many more.  There are currently several Hyline alumni that are now directors themselves of successful dance teams.

·         There have been hundreds of honor graduates and two valedictorians on Hyline’s rosters.

·         The Hyline has traveled to New York City, California, Florida, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Hawaii.  They have also danced and toured in Europe.  The Hyline has traveled to Dallas to participate in the Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Classic festivities.
